Ah, the good old days... For those who were born in the 70s and 80s. Fond memories...

1. You grew up watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk, and Mickey Mouse. Not to forget, Ninja turtles, My Little Pony and Smurfs too.

2. You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You would squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug. The teachers said you must brush each side 10 times too.

3. You know what SBC stands for.

4. You pay 40 cents for Chocolate or Strawberry milk every week in class.

5. You watch a very popular Malay dubbed Japanese drama on RTM1 about schoolgirls who possess powerful skills in volleyball called Meoro Attack.

6. You find your friends with pagers and handphones cool in Secondary school.

7. SBS buses used to be non-air conditioned. The bus seats were made of wood and the cushions were red. The big red bell gave a loud BEEP! when pressed. TIBS bus tickets were colourful, and the conductor would check for tickets by using a machine, which punched a hole in the ticket.

8. Envelopes given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children’s Day.

9. You've probably read Young Generation magazine, and know who 'Vinny' the little vampire and Acai the constable is.

10. You were there when they first introduced MRT here. You went on the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to catch the scenery.

11. Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

12. Strawberry ShortCake and Barbie Dolls fascinate Gals.

13. You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.

14. You longed to buy titbits called Kaka (20cents per pack), and Ding Dang (50 cents per box), that had a toy in it that changed every week. Not forgetting the 15 cents animal crackers and the Ring Pop, where the lollipop was the “diamond” on the ring.

17. KFC used to be a high-class restaurant that serve food in plates and let you use metal forks and knives.

18. Catching was the IN thing and twist was the magic word.

19. Your English workbooks were made of some damn poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

20. CDIS were your best friend.

21. The only computer lessons in school involved funny pixilated characters in 16 colours walking about trying to teach you maths.

22. Water bottles were slinged around your neck and a must everywhere you go.

23. Boys loved to play soccer with small plastic balls in the basketball court.

24. Teng-teng, five stones, chapteh, hantam bola and zero point were all the rage with the girls and boys too...

25. Science was fun with the balsam and the angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fish.

26. Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, eternalized in our minds from the textbooks. Even Mr Wally & Mr. Yakki. What about Miss Lala??? And Zaki and Tini in Malay Textbooks?

27. We carry out experiments of our own to get ourselves badges for being a Young Zoologist/Botanist etc.

28. Every Children's day and National day you either get pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or dumb files with 'Happy National Day 1994'.

29. In Primary six you had to play buddy for the younger kids like big sister and brother.

30. We wear BM2000, BATA, or Pallas shoes.

31. Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

32. The worksheets were made of brown rough paper of poor quality.

33. You went to school in slippers and raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the school to sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

34. School dismissal time was normally around 1 pm.

35. There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday.

36. Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $3 or more for pocket money everyday.

37. You see Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

38. You freak out when the teacher tells you to line up according to height and hold hands with the corresponding boy or girl.

39. Boys like to catch fighting spiders.

40. Collecting and battling erasers was a pastime for boys.

41. Autograph books were loaded with "Best Wishes", "Forget Me Not", and small poems like "Bird fly high, hard to catch. Friend like you, hard to forget".

42. Class monitors and prefects loved to say, "You talk some more, I write your name ah!"

43. There were at least 40 people in one class.

44. Large, colourful schoolbags were carried.

45. You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable.

Eh winners,

As per our numerous conversations over the past dunno how long, our 10-year anniversary as friends (sometimes enemies) is coming up. It'll be held tentatively on 2nd January 2007, which is in approximately 2 months time. Do keep that date free.

Besides automatic invitations to all 10-year alumni and their other halves, as wonderful friendly people, we have gladly extended this invitation to friends who have not made it to 10 years. This list includes our appointed head of security for the occasion Mr Ivan Zeng. Ivan we'll feed u no worries. Anyhow, we'll add to the list in time to come.

As self appointed organiser, I welcome any suggestions as to the venue, cost considerations, or anything to do with the thing. Peanuthead is my 2IC so look for him to present your ideas. He will sort them out and present them to me when we begin actual planning when my hols start come December.

Meantime, get cracking.

Lesson Number 1:

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day.
A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and Do nothing all day long?
The crow answered: "Sure, why not."
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested.
All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Management Learning: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson Number 2:

A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy.
"Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fourth night, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.
Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer and who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Management Learning: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Lesson Number 3:

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold; the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was.
The dung was actually thawing him out!
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.
Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!

Management Learning:
1) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy.
2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
3) And when you're in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!

Lesson Number 4:

The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked.
As they went along, they passed some people who remarked, "it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding".
The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions.

Later, they passed some people that remarked, "What a shame, he makes that little boy walk."
They decided they both would walk!

Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride.
So the both rode the donkey!

Now they passed some people that shamed them by saying "how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey".
The boy and man said they were probably right so they decided to carry the donkey.
As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.

Management Learning:
If you try to please everyone, you will eventually lose your ass.

Lesson Number 5:

Once PVNR (PV Narasimha Rao), L.K.Advani and Laloo Prasad Yadav were travelling in an autorickshaw.
They met with an accident and all three of them died.
Yama was waiting for this moment at the doorstep of death.
He asks PVNR and Advani to go to HEAVEN.
But, for Laloo, Yama had already decided that he should be sent to HELL.

Laloo is not at all happy with this decision. He asks Yama as to why this discrimination is being made.
All the three of them had served the public.
Similarly, all took bribes, all misused public positions, etc.
Then why > the > differential treatment?
He felt that there should be a formal test or an objective evaluation before a decision is made; and should not be just based on opinion or pre conceived notions.

Yama agrees to this and asks all the three of them to appear for an English test.
PVNR is asked to spell "INDIA" and he does it correctly.
Advani is asked to spell "ENGLAND" and he too passes.
It is Laloo's turn and he is asked to spell "CZECHOSLOVAKIA".
Laloo protests that he doesn't know English.
He says this is not fair and that he was given a tough question and thus forced to fail with false intent.

Yama then agrees to conduct a written test in Hindi (to give another chance > assuming that Laloo should at least feel that Hindi would provide an equal platform for all three).
PVNR is asked to write "KUTTA BOLA BHOW BHOW".
He writes it easily and passes.
Advani is asked to write "BILLY BOLI MYAUN MYAUN". He too passes.
Laloo is asked to write "BANDAR BOLA GURRRRRR....."
Tough one. He fails again. Laloo is extremely unhappy.

Having been a student of history (which the other two weren't), he now requested for all the 3 to be subjected to a test in history.
Yama says 'OK', but this would be the last chance ; and that he would not take any more tests.
PVNR is asked: "When did India get Independence?".
He replied "1947" and passed.
Advani is asked "How many people died during the independence struggle?".
He gets nervous.
Yama asked him to choose from 3 options: 100,000 or 200,000 or 300,000.
Advani catches it and says 200,000 and passes.
It's Laloo's turn now. Yama asks him to give the Name and Address of each of the 200,000 who died in the struggle.
Laloo accepts defeat and agrees to go to HELL.

Management Lesson:
"IF YOUR MANAGEMENT HAS DECIDED TO SCREW YOU, THERE IS NO ESCAPE"

About IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT)

IPT is a voluntary program to assist NSmen to pass their IPPT, catering for NSmen who are willing to invest their time and commitment to undergo formal PT sessions in their attempt to pass IPPT. IPT is managed by the PT (NS) Branch, Army Fitness Centre and is conducted at Bedok and Khatib Fitness and Conditioning Centres (FCC).

IPT Program Structure

IPT is a 5-week non-residential training program. It provides differentiated training packages for individual NSmen to overcome their weak areas in physical fitness. NSmen would be coached on the training methodology to improve their performance in IPPT as well as lectures in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is conducted twice a week, each session being 3 hours in duration.
